Two Basic Types of Adult Incontinence

A lot of people suffer from a weak bladder and bowel incontinence; both men and women alike. Although this condition is very much curable nowadays, most sufferers are still embarrassed to discuss the problem with their physician. In fact, there are a lot who never spill out their condition even to their families until such time that the problem is already getting obvious. The thought of having this condition is already very embarrassing, let alone being discussed with someone who is knowledgeable enough about adult incontinence. Incontinence among adults is the condition of which a person does not have the ability to control bladder activities and bowel movements. There are two types of incontinence: the urinary and fecal incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is more prevalent as compared to the fecal incontinence. It is the condition of losing control over the bladder. It can happen to anyone at any age, at any time and affects both men and women. It is more common among people aged 50 and above. Some symptoms manifested by urinary incontinence includes having urine leaks, and excessing wetting. These symptoms are due to having an overactive bladder and a weak bladder muscles. It could also be due to blockage caused by enlarged prostate, multiple sclerosis, damaged nerves in the urinary system and other medical conditions. Urinary incontinence is subdivided into four subtypes: the stress incontinence, overflow incontinence, urge incontinence and functional incontinence. Urinary incontinence happen when the muscles in the bladder are too weak to keep up with the overactive bladder activity. If the muscles can no longer keep the bladder closed, patients may accidentally have urine leakage when they laugh, sneeze, cough or lift a heavy object. Most often, patients experiences a strong urge to use the bathroom, yet have a very little amount of urine. This is because of the overactive bladder. There are different treatments available for every type. Most of the options include bladder training, kegels exercise, certain medications and surgery in serious cases.

Fecal incontinence is a rare type of incontinence. It is a medical condition that is characterized by inability to control bowel movements and leaking. There are about 6 million Americans who suffer this condition. Just like urinary incontinence, people of any age can be affected by fecal or bowel incontinence, but it is more common among adults. It can be caused by several medical problems. Mostly it is due to a weak or damaged anal sphincter muscle and nerves. It can also be due to an absent storage capacity within the rectum, pelvic floor dysfunction and even diarrhea. People who suffer fecal incontinence experience a strong urge to defecate. This condition is very rare, yet it is much more serious that urinary incontinence. Thus, if you are suffering from bowel incontinence, immediately seek help from your primary doctor for treatment. There are a lot of treatments available for fecal incontinence. Among these are change in diet, medications and drugs, and bowel training. In some cases, you may undergo surgery to treat the problem especially if the condition is no longer curable by simple medications.

It never crossed my mind that one day I would be having a discussion with a doctor concerning my incontinence issues and that I would need to wear an Adult Diaper. But that discussion did happen to me at the age of 57. In July of 2006 I was diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer, and told that I needed surgery. I had been a healthy athletic male all of my life, and to be told I needed cancer surgery was devastating. When the doctor talked to me about the surgery, I paid close attention to all of the specifics, and I remember him saying “Oh by the way you could experience some incontinence issues following the surgery”. At the time I never gave the incontinence issues a thought, after all I was a guy that had been in competitive sports all my life, had run in 9 Hood to Coast races, one marathon, played golf at least twice a week, and snow skied 30 times a season. I thought to myself that I would over come the incontinence issues and master that problem like I had every other athletic obstacle in my life. Well, I was wrong. The successful surgery came and went, but the incontinence issues have stayed with me now for over three years.

I think for me I never thought twice about wearing the Pad, Guard, Depend, Adult Diaper or what ever you want to call this item. I knew I needed it and was going to have to live with it, so I better make the best of it. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing fun or exciting about wearing an adult diaper, but you go forward with the cards you were given.

After my surgery, I first used a product called “Kroger Guards for Men”. My first thoughts of the product was, “these look nice and are comfortable”. The product was soft with ruffled edges. It also looked large enough to absorb as much liquid without spilling over and causing me an embarrassing moment. I can remember thinking at the time that an embarrassing moment was my biggest concern, not comfort. The Kroger Guards fit well, was comfortable, and dependable for long periods of time. In two years of using the Kroger Guards, I never experienced the embarrassing moment in public due to leaks. Don’t get me wrong, I never forget that I am wearing a guard, but I have accepted it and have learned to live with it.

As I said before, I am a very active person and I have found out that the more active one is the more often you have to change your guard. In order to change guards, I am always having to carry a spare guard in my back pocket of my pants. Because the Kroger Guards were large, the guard would be noticeable in my back pockets. That really didn’t bother me, but I started hearing my wife say “push the pad down into your back pocket”. When it finally came to some of my friends telling me the same thing, I felt I needed to look at making a change.

That is when I was introduced to the product called “Depend Guards for Men”. I found out right away that the guard worked just as well, felt just as good, and fit into my back pocket of my pants much easier. The Depend pad is smaller but is just as absorbent as the larger Kroger pad.

Wearing a pad for my incontinence is just part of my life now. I run three or four times a week, play golf during the spring and summer almost everyday, and ski during the winter months all the time wearing a Depend Guard to help deal with my incontinence. Being incontinent has not slowed me down, it is just something that I have had to add to my daily “Things To Do List”. I always carry an extra pad in my running bag, in my golf bag, in my ski bag and in the pair of pants I am wearing for the day.

Where Can I buy Depend and Poise Products?

Depend diapers and other incontinence products can be purchased at most retail stores such as Walmart , Safeway, or any other major retailer. Also, the smaller drug stores such as Walgreens and other smaller drug stores carry a variety of Depend products. Another good place to get diapers in bulk is warehouse clubs such as Cosco or Sams Club. For those who are embarrassed about buying adult diapers in a physical store can go to the internet where there are many online retailers who offer discreet shipping. You can even set up auto ordering so you can have a fresh box of Depends on a regular schedule.

Where do I look for information on Depends underwear?
Depends is probably the most recognizable brand of adult diapers on the market when it comes to adult incontinence diapers. Besides for http://www.adultdiaperexpert.com there are other helpful sites to finding the right diaper for you. The Depend website has some very helpful information when trying to decide on what adult diaper will work best for you.

Is Latex contained in any Depends diapers?

Absolutely no latex is contained in any Depends products.

Do insurance companies pay for Depends and Poise incontinence products?
Unfortunately there is not a simple answer to this question. It is totally dependant on the type of insurance coverage you have. Some plans do help cover the cost of adult diapers. It is best you check with your provider.

What Depends Diaper is best for bowel incontinence?
Although everyone is a little different, most people with bowel incontinence tend to purchase Depend Fitted Maximum Protection. There are other Depend Adult diapers that will also work for bowel incontinence. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Do Depends eliminate odor?
Depends diapers help with incontinence odor in a couple ways. Depends diapers have a special technology that turns urine into a thicker substance so that it does not leak. This obviously helps deal with the older problem. Second, The Depends Adult Diaper is made with materials that natural combat the chemicals that make urine smell bad.

What are Poise products?
Depends Poise pads are a incontinence product made specifically for women. They are designed with anatomical comfort in mind.

What are Depends Guards?
Depends Guards are made specifically for men. They have a “stretchy” pouch that acts like a cup for maximum absorbency and comfort. It is important to note that Depends guards are only sold in one level of absorbency. These Depends underwear are meant for males with moderate to light incontinence.

Are Depends belted shields unisex?

Unfortunately, baby diapers are more advanced and more effective then the counterpart adult version. Adult disposables are improving, however they have along way to go until the match the efficiency and effectiveness of baby diapers. Advances, in recent years, had added more padding and more polymer gel, which has created a better adult incontinence product but there is still along way to go.

There are other major differences between the baby diaper and their adult counterpart, baby diapers have a bikini-style fit and use singlewide tapes for both sides. The reason that adult diapers are not cut this way is because adults have larger thighs. Therefore, an adult diaper is cut so that there is a better fit around the leg band. This snugger fit around the legs prevents leaks when sitting down. The snugger the diaper fits the overall better protection you will receive. Tena, is known for a much better than most other diapers on the market right now. Tena has been able to give it’s users a customized feeling with the way the tap and wing fit. One, possible, negative to Tena, is that the manufacturer has switched the backing from plastic to cloth.

In order to have an honest review of these adult incontinence products it is very important to review some of the disadvantages or flaws. The largest flaw of adult diapers is clumping. This happens when the padding slides into crotch from the sides, front and rear. When this happens, it leaves you vulnerable to leaks because there is very little coverage remaining in the front and back of the diaper. Many of the store brand diapers have problems with clumping. The premium adult diapers are less likely to have an issue with clumping, for example, Tranquility, Molicare and Abena that we discussed earlier.

The negative review of adult diapers has put extra stress and embarrassment onto your condition. Some people find it very hard to overcome the negative stigma attached to using adult incontinence products. As more people begin to talk about this issue and easier it will be for people to get much needed information about the condition as well as the products that are out on the market that can help people regain their independence. Some people have found out the great benefits of using adult incontinence products while others still shy away from experimenting with them. If the fear of purchasing them in person is what is stopping your from taking advantage of these products, most every product mentioned in this article can be found online. Because of the technological advances, you are now able to do your research and purchase these products on line, saving your money and personal stress. The product gets delivered to your home where you can determine which product works best for your life style. Adult incontinence diapers, whether you choose to use pads, liners, “undergarments” or pull-ons, they will all provide the personal level of protection you need in order to get back to your life before you struggled with incontinence issues. are going to provide a very real element of protection and allow folks to get back to their lives. It is time that this information about these products and condition is available for everyone struggling with regaining their independence. Diapers are no longer just for infants; they are a crucial part of overcoming incontinence.

Adult incontinence diapers cover a wide variety of products that have a solution to many different types of incontinence as well as different life styles. Whether you are looking for a product to help with light infrequent incontinence issues or a full fitted adult pull on brief, there is a choice with both pros and cons. It is really important that you evaluate the benefits as well as the risks to each type of adult incontinence diapers. This choice is really about what fits your life the best.

It has been suggested that if changing in public is that only deterrent to wearing the pull on style incontinence diaper, that it is possible to wear two pull-on diapers together. If you do have an accident, simple tear out the wet liner, along the sides. These products are meant to be easily torn along the seem. Once the wet pad section of the first diaper has been removed then it leave the second, dry diaper. This process eliminates having to completely undress in a public restroom. The negative to this suggestion is the extra bulk associated with wearing two pull-on diapers at once. There is a trade off for the comfort or not having to worry about changing in public is an accident does occurs.

It is very important that when you try anything new, a new type of continence adult diaper or experience with added protection, that you do so in the comfort of your home. It is very important that you have experimented and feel comfortable with the results of the product that you have chosen. One of the largest challenges that we mentioned above is changing in public. It is often difficult to manage this with privacy. And changing your diaper in a public restroom, you might also lack the space and time required to do a good good and make sure your incontinence product is fit properly to prevent leaks. It is important to remember that when changing your diaper that you also take the time to cleanse the skin. This is a very important step in order to keep your skin healthy. An anti-bacterial wipe works great for this type of use.

If you are unable to do a complete diaper change when away from home and if your skin is not sensitive and will allow it you can use a product like “Fresh Again Incontinent Odor Spray”. This type of product with reduce the oder from your urine. Also, if you are unable to do a complete diaper change, consider the option of just changing out an insert pad or liner (baby liners can be used for this). This can eliminate the frustration of changing the entire diaper but can offer a fresh and clean alternative. This is also a great way of cutting down on costs.

We mentioned the use of “tapes” earlier and it is important to point of that while in the past tapes were not also known to be reliable they have improved dramatically. Tapes have been known to unstick or pop off, loosening the diaper, or tear off the diaper completely. This can put you in a very uncomfortable position if you are out in public and don’t have another replacement one.

It is safe to say that almost any tape, can be it reused or not. Most tapes can be immediately peeled off and then re-positioned at the beginning. However, most of these tapes become set after they’ve been applied. If you are refasten the tape it can cause the diaper to leak. It is better if you don’t refasten the tape and if you have to use the restroom, slide the diaper down like traditional underwear. This will prevent the tape from malfunctioning and will reduce the risk of leaks.

If you do find that you are having to tape and reapply and are suffering the consequences of doing so, duct tape can be used because it is strong and sticks to every thing. The negative of using something like duct tape is that is makes the diaper pretty unusable after the initial wear. But it will keep with diaper and tape secure for extended periods of time which can offer security and ease for people that are frustrated with the problem of tapes. Remember that is it much easier to slide the diaper down like traditional underwear, especially if you have applied duct tape to hold the diaper in place.

It is impossible to tell each person what type of adult incontinence product to use because each each person has a different level of incontinence, different body shape and different standards for comfortable. This article is mainly to discuss the many different options that are available and to share some of the pros and cons of each different method. Like suggested earlier, it is better for you to experiment in the comfort of your own home to find out what products or combination of products works best for your level of incontinence and your lifestyle choices.

Bladder leakage or incontinence is a challenge for individuals, both male and female, who have to deal with the stress of managing this condition and trying to not let the condition control their life choices. While there are several solutions to this condition, many are very expensive such as medicine or surgery, a lot of people choose to use an adult incontinence product, like an adult disposable diaper.

An adult disposable diaper is constructed using a double layer of water-proof material (polyethylene), an absorbent synthetic material with a liner that is water repellent. Adult incontinence disposable diapers come in all sizes and variety, from light days to heavy and from simple pads to full on pull up style undergarments. There is a style to fit every lifestyle and situation. Your personal choice should reflect what type of continence you have, your income level, your comfort level and of course the level of protection you need to regain your confidence.

The first step is to try a disposable adult incontinence diaper in a home environment in order to access how valuable they are to regaining your independence. Wetting episodes can no longer slow you down and yield those uncomfortable and awkward consequences. The fear of an accidence happening while out in public has subsided as you realized that your pants, underwear and car seat remained dry throughout the day. This realization is the first step to trust the adult disposable diapers and take back your life. You have taken control back over and made incontinence take a back seat, a disposable adult diaper was just the tool you needs to change your life.

There is a major difference between Attends or Depends, nationwide brands, verses the thin cheaper store brands. And yet a large difference between Attends and Depends and the premium diaper that are now on the market. Taking this step to wear a disposable adult diaper is so much easier if you go with quality. Quality does also mean less changes as well. If you chose a store brand you will probably use more of them because they are unable to handle the same capacity. The thin store brands do not offer the same security that Attends or Depends can offer you. If you do decide to go that route, please do so in the privacy of your home in order to determine their potential for leaks and embarrassing accidents. You want to feel safe and completely trust your adult disposable diaper when out in the world.

We mentioned Molicare or Abena-X Premium diapers are a great solution for dealing with a overactive bladder. Before these Premium incontinence diapers hit the scene it was often suggested that people try to wear two diapers to give them more protection. You might have tried to use two diapers in the past and realized it is a lot of extra money and effort in order to reach the same results. There is a slight negative to these premium diapers, which is that, do bulge more so there is a trade off for more protection from an over active bladder. This can cause an issue depending on the type of clothing you wear. If you enjoying wearing tight clothing then these premium diapers could cause an issue with bulging and could make it less comfortable to be out in public. These extended wear premium incontinence diapers offer more independent; however, they have to fit your lifestyle and personal choices.

There is an incontinence product called Tranquility Topline that is considered a booster for added protection. This type of incontinence product adds absorbency to a standard brief style adult incontinence diaper. Tranquility topline fits better than other booster pads; however, can still cause leaks if the fit isn’t perfect.

The actual term “diaper” isn’t very commonly used in the industry. There are too many negative connotations associated with the term “diaper”. Many people automatically think infant or child. Therefore, terms like “brief” and “undergarment” are more commonly used when referring to adult incontinence products. There are huge differences between these type of produce though and it is important to know the difference and know exactly what you are looking for.

There are several different types of incontinence which can include an over active bladder., which leads to different type of. For incontinence related to sneezing, exercising or coughing there are light protective adult incontinence products. For example, an insert or a pad; Abena Abri-San X-Plus is a great disposable incontinence pad that can be worn with regular underwear and is a great choice for light to moderate incontinence issues. There are negative to using light protective adult incontinence products, they are not as absorbent as a traditional adult incontinence diaper and do not offer the same leak protection.

Pads as well as drip collectors offer a very low level of protection, which works great for leakage of a few drops from an over active bladder. Men that deal with an annoying dribble find that using a “sheath diaper” which is held in place by the underwear is a get alternative and offers just the right amount of protection. These pads and “sheath diapers” are small and discreet, so changing them while out in public is easy and they are easy to conceal on the way to the bathroom as well

The next level of protection for those people who have involuntary or uncontrollable bladder control issues, paralytic or giggle incontinence. The “brief-style” disposable adult incontinence diaper, for example the Abena Abri-Form X-Plus, is extremely absorbent and comfortable. The Abena Abri-Form X-Plus is constructed with four reusable tapes, leak guards, and a very absorbent core. Another great example of an adult incontinence product for mild to heavy incontinence issues is Attends Briefs Waistband. This product is considered an adult brief and consists of six tapes, leg gathers, and a very absorbent core. This type of adult brief is very discreet under clothing, offers good absorbency and is relatively secure.

Another option that offers more protection is the “undergarment”. These are larger, longer pads that cover from front waist to rear waist. They are generally wider than regular underwear pads to offer more protection. They can be worn alone, and attach by using elastic straps that button on. Some versions have a built-in waistband. The great thing about this type of adult incontinence produce is that concealment it very easy and there is little risk of bugling or clumping. Another great advantage to this style of “undergarments” is that they offer and easy on-easy off versatility allowing the you to use the restroom with out too much trouble. This is a great option for moderate incontinence while still allowing comfort and security.

The easy on-easy off feature that is associated with the “undergarments” also extends to tape-on diapers as well. Product that use the elastic waist band are key for people who want to use the bathroom and use the waist band in order to pull on and off the disposable diaper. This gives people a sense of freedom and allows them to use the restroom and not have to untap and remove their diaper. This is extremely useful for males. It is possible for a guy to tighten the lower tapes on his diaper and leave the upper tapes looser to allow for the diaper to be pulled down in the front. That technique allows for use of a urinal.

The last type of protect that is out on the market is, “protective underwear”. This is a very popular pull-up adult incontinence diaper, for example the Abena Abri-Flex. This type of protection is very easy to pull up and down, allowing for easy bathroom trips. These are constructed with an elasticized crotch and breathable exterior mesh. However, “protective underwear” is less absorbed than “brief-style” diapers and are more prone to leaks. This style of diapers is actually based on the baby diaper, a step up from infant diapers but not quite all the way to underwear. And the adult diaper follows suit. They have the same look as underwear, they fell like underwear and yet it offers a high level of protection, like a diaper. And another great advantage is the pull on and pull off style which allows for easy bathroom trips.

The negative side to using these adult pull-ons diapers is the problem of changing completely when you have had an accident. Because they fit just like regular underwear, you have to take off your shoes and pants in order to change them. If this happens when in public it can be quite a hassle and stress trying to completely undress in a public restroom and forget about any privacy and going unnoticed. So it is very important to take this into consideration when opting to use this type of adult diaper. That is why it is so important to try each of these options out before hand. It is great to know exactly what you are going to encounter before you are forces to deal with a problem like these while out and about. You don’t want your first experience with incontinence products to be something negative, which could completely steer you away from using any of these products to help you deal with your overactive bladder.
